Treats, Not Bribes
One thing you want to be sure not to do is to bribe your child. There is a clear difference between giving your child a reward and giving your child a bribe. A reward is given after the child has done what she needed to do correctly, and a bribe is given on the promise your child will do what she is suppose to. For example, if your child goes all day without an accident, you can reward the child with a small treat. However, it is not good to give your child a treat at the beginning of the day and make her promise not to have an accident. This will not work for two primary reasons. First, they are called “accidents” because they are generally not intentional. Second, if the child receives her reward up front, there is no incentive for her to do what she is supposed to.
Use the early success to motivate. Once your child has used the potty successfully once, you can use that as a means of motivation and a reminder of what behavior is expected. Continue reminding your child to try using the potty as you notice signs of readiness, but encourage your child to tell you when she feels she needs to pee or poop. Continue offering your child accolades each time she successfully uses the potty until she is staying dry consistently all day.
